Descriptions: This interactive session will guide participants through real-world periodontal cases to calibrate and clarify common areas of confusion in diagnosis and treatment planning. Designed around the 2017 American Academy of Periodontology (AAP) Classification of Periodontal Diseases, this course offers hands-on practice applying the system to everyday clinical scenarios. Together, we’ll explore practical strategies for using the updated classifications in both documentation and patient care.
Objectives:
- Review the key components of the 2017 AAP Classification System for Periodontal Diseases, including staging, grading, and extent.
- Practice applying the 2017 AAP Guidelines to real-world clinical cases to accurately classify periodontitis.
- Identify the clinical metrics needed to determine stage, grade, and extent during collaborative case calibration.
- Work through case scenarios to develop individualized and accurate treatment plans based on classification findings.
- Discuss common challenges in applying the new guidelines in practice and explore peer-driven solutions.
- Identify patient management strategies that support the delivery of evidence-based periodontal care and improved outcomes.

Tulsi Patel, RD, MHA
Tulsi Patel, RDH, MHA is an Associate Professor at UTHealth Houston School of Dentistry. She has served in numerous roles at her current institution but has a true passion for teaching periodontology. She actively completes educational research on periodontology and has presents her findings at regional, national and international conferences. She also leads the Mastermind course on Periodontal Classifications and Treatment Planning for Educators Platform. One of her most significant accomplishments includes co-creating the “Periodontitis and Gingivitis Module Utilizing 2017 AAP and EFP Classification System for Periodontal Disease” for Proctor & Gamble Dentalcare.com. She is a recipient of the UTHealth Houston School of Dentistry (UTSD) Lorna J. Bruning Teaching Excellence Award in 2018 and 2023, as well as the Procter & Gamble Teaching Excellence Award in 2023. She currently serves as the Director of the Center for Health Promotion at UTSD, which focuses on teaching prevention and health promotion to dental students as it relates to an Integrated Dental Medicine clinical model. In 2024, she was selected to become a Fellow of the American Dental Hygienists’ Association.
