Dan Akenhead & Angela Cook, RDH, MS
Dan Akenhead is the founder of Akenhead Law Firm, P.C., where he focuses on healthcare law, advising hospitals, healthcare organizations, and medical professionals on regulatory compliance, contracting, administrative matters, and professional licensure. He regularly represents physicians and other healthcare providers in matters involving licensing boards, credentialing, peer review, and regulatory investigations, helping clients navigate complex legal issues while protecting their professional careers.
Dan earned his J.D. from the University of New Mexico School of Law in 2012 and has been recognized as a Southwest Super Lawyers Rising Star from 2015–2022. In addition to his legal practice, he serves as an adjunct faculty member at the University of New Mexico School of Law, where he teaches the editorial board of the Natural Resources Journal and shares his practical experience with future attorneys.
Drawing on years of experience representing healthcare providers and institutions, Dan offers practical insight into risk management, professional liability, documentation, and the legal strategies that help protect both patients and providers. His presentations provide healthcare professionals with a unique perspective on how everyday clinical decisions can either safeguard, or jeopardize, a healthcare professional's license and career.

Angela Cook, RDH, MS, is an Assistant Professor in the Division of Dental Hygiene at the University of New Mexico and serves as the Dental Coordinator for the UNM School-Based Health Program. A registered dental hygienist with experience in diverse clinical settings, she is dedicated to expanding access to oral healthcare and improving outcomes for underserved populations throughout New Mexico.
In addition to her academic and clinical leadership roles, Angela serves as a Clinical Reviewer for the New Mexico Medicaid Fee-for-Service Contract, where she reviews dental prior authorization requests to evaluate medical necessity, ensure compliance with state coverage guidelines, and support equitable access to evidence-based dental care. This work provides her with a unique perspective on healthcare policy, utilization management, and the challenges patients and providers face in navigating public health insurance systems.
Angela currently serves as President of the New Mexico High Desert Dental Hygienists’ Association and is an active member of the American Dental Hygienists’ Association, National Dental Hygienists’ Association, and the American Dental Education Association. Her professional interests and research focus on advancing the dental hygiene profession, promoting health equity and access to care, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration, and strengthening principles of practice that support patient-centered care and professional decision-making. She is committed to educating future dental hygienists and advocating for accessible, high-quality oral healthcare.
