Descriptions: Dental visits can still be a source of anxiety for many patients, which may increase the likelihood of medical emergencies during appointments. This course is designed to equip dental professionals with the skills to accurately diagnose and effectively manage the most common medical emergencies. Participants will explore a wide range of potential scenarios from syncope to anaphylactic shock, with a focus on appropriate treatment protocols. The course will also emphasize the critical role of preventative measures, including thorough patient assessments prior to treatment, and highlight the importance of a well-stocked and accessible medical emergency kit.

Objectives:

  • Understand the significance of obtaining baseline vital signs to assess patient health and identify potential risks before treatment.
  • Recognize how practicing emergency scenarios enhances preparedness and improves response times in real-life situations.
  • Learn to recognize the signs and symptoms of the most common medical emergencies that may arise in the dental office.
  • Gain knowledge of step-by-step protocols for addressing several common medical emergencies in the dental office setting.

Ellen Grimes, RDH, MA, MPA, Ed.D

Dr. Grimes is the retired Vermont Technical College Dental Hygiene Program and has taught dental hygiene since 1981. Her areas of expertise are the Medical Emergencies, Dental Sciences, Clinical Dental Hygiene, Oral Pathology and the Administration of Local Anesthetics. She was the recipient of the 2001 University of Vermont Kroepsch Maurice Award for teaching excellence. Ellen was the President of the Vermont Dental Hygienists' Association from 1993-1994 and has served that organization in numerous capacities over the past 35 years. She is the author of the textbook, “Medical Emergencies: Essentials for the Dental Professional” now in its updated second edition and has taught continuing education courses on the topic nationally and internationally.
