Descriptions: We discuss national initiatives intended to reduce the shortage of dental hygienists by allowing less qualified people to practice dental hygiene.

Objectives:

  • Describe ADA proposals intended to address the workforce shortage of dental hygienists.
  • Describe training & functions of the ADA's proposed Oral Preventive Assistant (OPA).
  • Discuss actions taken by the ADHA to address the ADA proposals.
  • Discuss how clinical dental hygienists can get involved with opposing proposals that would reduce the requirements to become a licensed dental hygienist.

Lisa J. Rowley, MSDH, RDH, CDA, FADHA

Lisa J. Rowley has been a dental hygienist for over 40 years and has dedicated her career to dental hygiene education and advocating for the dental hygiene profession. Lisa was the founding director of a BS degree dental hygiene program that intentionally prepares dental hygienists to work as direct access providers. Lisa has maintained continuous membership in the American Dental Hygienists’ Association (ADHA) since she entered the profession, and she currently serves as Advocacy Director for the Oregon Dental Hygienists' Association.
