Descriptions: Through a combination of theoretical instruction and practical applications, this presentation will equip dental clinicians with the knowledge needed to integrate cutting-edge instrumentation and alternative instrumentation strategies to elevate their practice and stay at the forefront of the profession.

Objectives:

  • Develop strategies to utilize traditional and alternative instrumentation for non-surgical treatment of periodontal diseases.
  • Discuss how periodontal pocket topography dictates proper instrument selection for narrow and wide deep pockets to improve clinical efficiency.
  • Enhance the ability to utilize alternative fulcrums, and patient and operator positioning beyond the traditional skills learned.
  • Review the principles of instrument sharpening including angles and appropriate techniques while enhancing their overall performance in clinical settings.

Sheree Duff Sawka, RDH, BSDH, MSA

Sheree received her Bachelor of Science in Dental Hygiene degree from the University of Michigan (U of M) in 1980 and her Master of Science in Health Care Administration from Central Michigan University in 1991. Over her 45-year career, she has held various roles including clinical instructor, faculty member, dental hygiene Program Director, Associate Dean, and Dean of Dental programs in private, community, and university settings. She has taught extensively both in the classroom and clinical settings. Sheree's passion is advanced instrumentation following years of clinical practice in the periodontal specialty setting. Additionally, she has taught this subject area to dental hygiene students as special rotations and to the periodontal residents at the U of M School of Dentistry. Sheree is a former Consultant to the Joint Commission on Dental Accreditation, and a current member of the American Dental Association, Joint Commission on National Dental Examinations, and Test Construction Committee where she sits on numerous committees. Sheree works full-time at the University of Michigan, School of Dentistry.
