Descriptions: Explore innovative, patient-friendly approaches to caries management in this focused one-hour presentation created especially for practicing dental hygienists. As dentistry continues to shift toward prevention and minimally invasive care, hygienists play a critical role in identifying early carious lesions, assessing risk, and supporting non-restorative treatment strategies. The session will review the caries process and introduce current non-invasive options, including resin-based and glass ionomer sealants, silver diamine fluoride (SDF), and regenerative therapies, using clinical scenarios to illustrate when and why each modality may be indicated in everyday practice. Attention will be given to patient-specific factors such as age, caries risk, esthetics, and clinical setting. By the end of this session, participants will feel confident recognizing when sealants, SDF, or regenerative therapies are indicated and understanding their role in supporting non-invasive caries management within everyday clinical practice.

Objectives:

  • Explain the role of dental hygienists in non-invasive and non-restorative caries management
  • Identify clinical indications for sealants, SDF, and regenerative therapies based on lesion activity and caries risk
  • Recognize appropriate candidates for non-invasive caries treatments across different age groups
  • Communicate effectively with patients about treatment options, benefits, limitations, and esthetic considerations
  • Support ongoing monitoring and maintenance of non-invasive caries therapies during preventive visits
